There are many different types of ear piercings, from the traditional lobe piercing to the more exotic tragus piercing and even your snug. No matter what type of ear piercing you choose, it’s important to take care of your new piercing and give it time to heal properly.

Lobe piercings are the most common type of ear piercing. They can be done at almost any age and generally heal within 8-12 weeks give you clean them once a day as directed.

Cartilage piercings, such as your tragus, conch, snug etc are a bit more complicated. These piercings take longer to heal and can have more complications if you neglect cleaning. It’s important to clean your cartilage piercing regularly and follow all aftercare instructions from your piercer.

Ear piercings generally heal within 8-16 weeks, but it’s important to not remove the piercing jewellery for at least 12 weeks after piercing or remove them for extended periods of time within the first year as this can cause infection or your piercing to close.

Each piercer will show you how to clean your piercings after it is pierced, but in case you forget, you will need to follow these steps:

Clean your piercing no more than twice a day (recommended once a day) for 6-8 weeks
Only clean your piercing with saline solution, salt water or a proper piercing aftercare spray. Do not use alcohol, tea tree oil or anything that will dry out your piercing.
If you do not want to get a spray we will provide you with a small saline solution pack which must be used within 3 days after opening- keep it in the fridge. After using the saline pack, you can make up your own solution (you will need to make it fresh each day) by mixing up ½ teaspoon of table salt (or ¼ teaspoon of sea salt) in 1 cup of warm water.
Wet a clean cotton tip in the solution and gently clean thoroughly around both sides of the jewellery to remove any build-up of dries discharge from the piercing.
Avoid sleeping on your piercing for the first month and be careful not to catch the jewellery with your hair, hairbrushes, towels clothing and pillows!
Irritated piercings can form a pink or red bubble of hypertrophic scarring. If this happens to you, come in and we will provide you with cream to help settle it down.
Wait at least 12 weeks before changing your jewellery (longer if it is tender). Always have a piercer do the first jewellery change to ensure you have the right-sized jewellery installed.
Cartilage piercing can take up to 6-8 months to heal completely. A healthy lifestyle will help to shorten healing time.
